Dementia Friendly Activities at Wisteria House

Our daily dementia-friendly activities are varied, fulfilling and fun. Our social activities are influenced by the skills that residents have picked up over their lifetimes, whether that’s painting and gardening, baking and exercising, or simple everyday household chores.

Our meaningful activities are designed to provide a sense of fulfilment and purpose, boosting confidence and independence and improving quality of life. We focus on residents’ interests, tailoring activities to their needs and preferences. Residents can take part in as many or as few activities as they like.

We embrace any excuse for a celebration, and you’ll find us dressing up for race days and casino evenings and enthusiastically marking special occasions like World Biscuit Day and World Doughnut Day!

Our Facebook pages give an excellent feel for daily life in our Care Homes. Please take a look.

Our Activities

Activities at Wisteria are varied, fulfilling, and most of all, fun. Our activities are designed to promote emotional and physical wellbeing and are led by our experienced and incredibly creative staff team. Activities provide an excellent opportunity for staff to really get to know the residents, creating a strong emotional bond.

We offer varied skill-based group activities, celebrations and themed days, visiting entertainers and organised trips to local shops and garden centres. Every day is different.

Celebrations and Themed Days

At Wisteria, we’ll find any excuse to dress up, celebrate and mark an occasion. It’s not just about the fun on the day, it’s about the preparation too. Our residents enjoy helping with the preparations and having their hair done and nails polished the day before, all adding to the excitement. Our staff team work hard the day before, enabling them to relax and spend time with the residents on the big day.

Meaningful Activities

Our staff team always encourage independence and helping out around the home. This can include activities like hanging washing out, watering plants, cleaning the brass, washing up, laying the tables, sweeping the floors and dusting their bedrooms, the list is endless! Although this is not for everyone, many people take pride in these jobs, and we provide plenty of compliments along the way.

One-to-One Activities

Not everyone enjoys or can participate in group activities, so we offer many different one-to-one options. Our staff team often create situations that allow the people living in the home to parent them, especially the younger members of staff. This is wonderful for promoting self-esteem. This can include a resident showing a member of staff how to waltz or knit, giving cooking tips, or gently brushing a staff member's hair.

As a person’s dementia progresses, their ability to join in with group activities decreases. Here, our staff take a different approach, offering sensory activities which can include:

- Therapeutic music, such as nature sounds and the sound of children playing
- Hand massage
- Foot spa
- Slowly brushing hair with soft brushes
- Stroking the face with different, soft-textured materials
- Pet visits
- Sitting and watching group activities
- Sitting on the patio with a member of staff in gentle sunlight
- Exploring a pillowcase full of different sensory objects

Health & Social Benefits

Our activities are designed to provide essential physical, emotional and cognitive stimulation throughout all stages of dementia.

Our staff take real pride in designing an extensive range of activities and providing opportunities for socialisation, celebration and fun, whether through arts and crafts, dressing up, music therapy, reminiscence or just being silly!

Sometimes, just letting our residents know that we are tired and would ‘love a hug’ is enough to add meaning and purpose to their lives.
